My favourite place in Newcastle is St Mary’s Lighthouse
We are a nation of explorers, and with so many hidden gems all around the UK we’re never short of great local places to discover including in Newcastle upon Tyne.
And who better to share some of the best places to visit in the local area than Emma, our in-house Reservations Executive.
Emma knows a thing or two about the best places to visit around Newcastle, including her favourite spot: St Mary’s Lighthouse.
“I love visiting St Mary’s Lighthouse because it is a beautiful walk along the coast and I often used to visit with my Grandma.”
Get to know St Mary’s Lighthouse
Accessible via a short causeway, St. Mary’s has all the fascination of a miniature, part-time island. The Lighthouse completed in 1898 remained operational until 1984. Since then the Lighthouse and former keepers’ cottages have been operated as a visitor centre by North Tyneside Council.
Three reasons Emma loves visiting St Mary’s Lighthouse
With so much to see and experience here, it is no wonder Emma is a big fan! She shares three reasons why it is her favourite place to visit in the North East.
You can watch the seals basking in the sun.
It is a great place to relax in the sun and watch the wildlife.
Beautiful walk along the coast to access the causeway.
I would suggest parking at Spanish City then walking along the beach or if you are feeling active, get the Metro to Cullercoats and walk along the headland.
Always a good spot for an ice cream van.
Big hit with kids as there is usually always an ice cream van parking at the causeway car park. There is also the Rendezvous Café a short walk up the beach which does food and drink and was a filmed location for the TV series Vera.
